Installing Citrix XenServer 5.5

Download Citrix XenServer 5.5

Installing Citrix XenServer 5.5 is pretty straight forward. First you need to download the XenServer 5.5 iso file from Citrix. You can do that here. You want the installer, under #1 section.

Burning The ISO Image To CD

After you have downloaded XenServer you should have a file called FREE_XenServer-5.5.0-install-cd.iso, you now need to burn this .iso file to a CD.

If you are running Windows and don’t have an iso burner, I recommend using a simple free too called ISO Recorder. After you downlowd it, you can insert a blank CD, right click on a .iso file in Explorer and then click Copy Image to CD.

On Linux, you use the cdrecord command as follows

1) Find your CDROM device

cdrecord -scanbus

2) Burn the iso image to CD

cdrecord -v -pad speed=1 dev=0,0,0 FREE_XenServer-5.5.0-install-cd.iso

Bios Settings

There are two things you may have to change in your server’s Bios settings.

1) The boot order to ensure that the CDROM is looked for first.

2) Enable virtualization if you want to run hardward assisted virtual machines. (HVM) such as Windows. Check with your particular system to find out where this is.

Installation

Once you have the Bios configured, reboot and you should see the Xen installation process start up. Follow the rest of the onscreen instructions to complete the process. You need an ip address, netmask, gateway & dns server names.

Once the installation is complete, you will see the Xen console which looks like:

xenconsole
